Cookery demonstration:Indian vegetarian food 18 October 19h

18 October 2023 | 19:00 - 23:00

At the present moment, the interest in Asian food and the search for healthy eating options are very much on-trend. Against this backdrop, the Vegetarian Indian cooking demo (II) is a culinary experience combining the two concerns. The demo not only responds to the growing popularity of Asian food but also addresses the pressing need for more healthy eating options.

Discover vegetarian Indian food in a cosmopolitan setting

The resounding success of the first session held in February 2023 led to a huge demand for a follow-up. In this second demo, we hope to respond to the high expectations and to guarantee an exquisite gastronomic experience with recipes for vegetarian Indian dishes chosen especially for the occasion.

There are three reasons to come to this cooking demo:

Learn about the ingredients and recipes for cooking vegetarian Indian food at home

This cooking demo will introduce you to the fascinating world of the tastes of southeast Asian food made with local products from the Mediterranean. You will learn to use a variety of ingredients as well as sauces, condiments, spices and herbs to create unique dishes.

You will learn how to balance tastes; how to mix spicy, sweet, savoury and bitter, an essential skill in southeast Asian cooking.

In this cooking demo, Steve has chosen three very singular recipes from Indian cooking:

  • Bel phuri
  • Aubergines stuffed with Maharashtra spices
  • Mushroom korma

Bel phuri, for instance, is a popular savoury aperitif that you will see in lots of street stalls if you ever travel to India. It is very nutritious, delicious and mildly spicy and low in fat. Steve will show us how to cook it using local ingredients and the recipe we use here at Ma Khin Café. A go-to dish you’ll love and soon be practising at home.

Learn why Indian food is so rich in vegetarian dishes and you will understand its culture

Indian food offers a wide range of vegetarian options, with a major focus on pulses, spices and cooking methods that enhance the flavours of vegetable ingredients.

If we talk about pulses, for example, Indian cooking uses a huge variety, including chickpeas, lentils and green soya.

Spices, probably one of the most characteristic features of Indian food, are also very beneficial for your health. For instance, turmeric, widely used in Indian cooking, is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

And if we look at cooking methods, we will see that slow cooking is the best way of enhancing flavours.

Shifting our focus to drinks and desserts, the cooking demo will also discuss the wide variety of vegetarian options.

And while vegetarian options are widely available all over the vast country, the north of India is probably where they are most popular. The cooking demo will talk about all this and more.

Meeting like-minded people and share experiences

Here at Ma Khin Café, you will not only learn about cooking, but you will also have a chance to meet other people passionate about food and Indian culture. Broaden your social circles while enjoying a unique experience. For us, the meeting between different cultures and people is core to our founding mission. And what better way to do it than around a table!
